Hong Kong “mile” looms as a two-horse war
Jan 29 2010
Two of international racing’s finest gallopers – the remarkable Good Ba Ba and rising champion Collection – are set for one of the year’s great showdowns when they clash in the Group 1 Stewards’ Cup at Sha Tin this Sunday.
Super miler Good Ba Ba has the score on the board, having won the Group 1 Hong Kong International Mile three times straight, but Collection is emerging as an outstanding horse over distances from 1600m to 2000m. The latter was a slashing second in the Group 1 Hong Kong International Cup in December.
While the two stars will dominate betting on the HK$8 million race, the class of the opposition is not to be taken lightly. Prolific money spinner Egyptian Ra will take no end of beating in his current outstanding form, while Sight Winner, Fellowship and Special Days are all capable of an upset.
The main focus, however, will be on the two champions and the world-class jockeys riding them. Good Ba Ba, trained by Derek Cruz, is to be ridden by French-born Olivier Doleuze, while John Moore’s Collection has the services of Australian great Darren Beadman. Neither horse will have an excuse on the score of trainer or rider.
Sky Racing will show the Group 1 Stewards’ Cup live as part of its coverage of the Sha Tin meeting this Sunday afternoon. The NSW and Victorian TABs will also wager on the meeting.
